We assemble gaffer-led lighting teams for shoots across Belgium, building the crew to the scale of the job — a gaffer with a best boy and a couple of electricians for a documentary or commercial, or a full lighting department with riggers and a power packs operator for a feature. Our gaffers plan the lighting in pre-production alongside the DP, walking locations on the tech scout to work out power, rigging points and the balance between natural and supplementary light.

Our teams arrive with a clear plan for distribution, dimming and control, and they work in Dutch, French and English so contact stays clean on mixed global crews. We set up lighting and grip together so flags, frames, diffusion and rigging hardware are all on the truck and the setup runs to schedule.

Here is how the picture comes together. Belgium's lighting craft is grounded in its naturalistic cinema. The Dardenne brothers' ready-light, observational style — developed across their Palme d'Or-winning films around Liege and Seraing — set an expectation that lighting should feel motivated and unforced, and Belgian gaffers carry that sensibility into commercial and drama work alike. The country's soft, diffuse northern light is itself a tool, and crews plan around the mild, frequently overcast maritime climate, treating cloud cover as a giant softbox or supplementing it when a project needs contrast.

Here is what we have to work with. In practice, the work is hands-on. The Belgian Tax Shelter has supported the studio and stage infrastructure that lighting departments rely on. Rental houses carry tungsten, HMI and LED inventory. For location lighting in heritage city cores such as the UNESCO-listed Grand-Place or the Historic Centre of Bruges, rigging and street power are arranged through city and regional permits, and our coordinators handle those approvals alongside the lighting plan.
