The naturalistic, muted realism of the Dardenne brothers, the formal precision of Chantal Akerman, the emotional palette of Lukas Dhont's 'Close' and the textured world of 'The Broken Circle Breakdown' all suggest distinct visual registers a production can draw on. The country's painterly heritage and the recognisable backdrops of the Grand-Place, the canals of Bruges and the North Sea coast feed into reference work too.
